Nebraska, 1855. Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank), una mujer solitaria que vive en un remoto pueblo del Medio Oeste, es elegida por la Iglesia para hacer regresar al mundo civilizado a tres mujeres que han perdido la razón. Para ello, cuenta con Briggs (Tommy Lee Jones), un delincuente al que salva de la horca con la condición de que la ayude a ejecutar su misión.
